Israel and Judah
become two kingdoms. Rehav'am, son of Shlomoh, reigned over the whole nation
for a very brief period, because the Northern Tribes separated definitively
from the Southern ones. The Northern Tribes took the official name of Israel,
while the Southern ones were identified with Judah. The Kingdom of Judah kept
Jerusalem, that King David established as the capital city, and had only the
Davidic dynasty reigning. The Kingdom of Israel settled the capital at
Tirtzah, but then it was moved to the newly built Shomeron (Samaria). The
Kingdom of Israel had nine different "dynasties" (of which the longest had
only five kings, other had four kings, three had two kings and four were just
one king only). This unusual way of being a kingdom contrasts with the
stability of the Davidic family on the throne of Jerusalem, that granted the
Kingdom of Judah a longer resistence against their enemies; in fact, Judah
survived the deportation of Israel for 135 years, and kept a major unity even
in exile. The Israeli dynasties are shown in the following list with different
colours.

The deportation
of the Northern Kingdom was gradually performed by Tiglat-pileser III,
king of Assyria, who sent to exile the Tribes settled in the East of the
Yarden, and then also the population of Galil (between 3020 and 3030 /
740 to 730 b.c.e.).
Some years
later, ShalmaneserV and SargonII carried on the final deportation, and
peoples from other subdued kingdoms were resettled in the land of
Israel. These peoples are known as "Samaritans".
